The imposing trachytic cliff that dominates the Villaperuccio valley hosts the Montessu necropolis, considered the most extensive and significant domus de janas funerary center in southern Sardinia.
The hypogeum settlement includes over forty tombs excavated starting from the Late Neolithic and used for several centuries until the Bronze Age. The architecture ranges from small single-room chambers reserved for individual depositions to large family complexes equipped with an entrance vestibule and multiple secondary rooms. Of particular significance are the two monumental tombs located at the edges of the ridge, characterized by majestic entrances surmounted by sculpted cornices and ample spaces destined for receiving ritual offerings.
The surface of the internal walls preserves a rich figurative repertoire incised into the volcanic stone bench. The symbolic motifs range from bull horns (protomes) to spiral reliefs and geometric grooves originally painted with red mineral substances. The extraordinary accuracy in the workmanship of the entrances and the reproduction of details typical of the dwellings of the living demonstrate great skill in the use of stone tools and the centrality of cults dedicated to the afterlife.
The sweeping view over the territory of Sulcis and the location within the volcanic amphitheater impart an unparalleled visual solemnity to the entire site.
