The Cannas di Sotto domus de janas necropolis, located within the urban center of Carbonia, constitutes one of the most significant hypogeum complexes in Sulcis, used for funerary purposes starting from the Late Neolithic and linked to the Ozieri culture.
The archaeological area includes twenty-six tombs carved into the trachytic rock, characterized by a remarkable variety of architectural solutions. The hypogea develop predominantly according to a horizontal layout scheme, preceded by open-air access corridors or entrance shafts leading into the internal environments. The burial chambers, often articulated in multiple communicating rooms, show careful wall workmanship and the presence of symbolic or functional elements, such as shaped closing doorways, steps, and niches for offerings. Some domus preserve traces of decorative and sculpted elements in the stone, recalling the architecture of the dwellings of the living and highlighting the deep religiosity of the prehistoric communities of the era.
Enhanced within a dedicated archaeological park, the site offers an extraordinary opportunity to understand the funerary practices, rituals, and social organization of the earliest human settlements in the territory of Sulcis.
