The powerful stone structures of the S'Omu e S'Orcu nuraghe, located within the territory of Domusnovas, rise on an open plain, dominating the access routes to the mining and agricultural basin of Iglesiente.
The building stands out within Nuragic architecture for its exceptional majesty and the complexity of its pentalobed layout. The original core, consisting of a central tower in local rock, is enclosed and reinforced by a broad four-lobed bastion that incorporates an additional four perimeter towers, connected to one another by imposing curtain walls. The external facings, formed by enormous polygonal blocks dry-laid in overlapping rows, display a construction technique of extraordinary solidity, imparting a striking visual imposingness to the monument. The internal articulation of spaces, accessible through wide architrave corridors, reveals rooms equipped with niches and tholos vaults that testify to the level of mastery achieved by Bronze Age artisans in managing loads and volumes.
Surrounding the main structure, an articulated village of huts originally extended, protected by an additional outer wall equipped with additional towers that underlined the dual strategic and civil function of the complex. The dominant position of the fortress, combined with the grandeur of its curtain walls, makes S'Omu e S'Orcu an element of primary importance for understanding the territorial, defensive, and communal organization of the protohistoric populations of Sulcis-Iglesiente.
