“Journey to the Center of Sardinia.”
That’s what Jules Verne’s famous adventure novel would have been called, had the French writer chosen to set it here, in the enchanted — yet very real — world of Gutturu Mannu.
Because exploring this place and its extraordinary atmosphere truly makes you feel like an explorer of fantastic realms, where all you need is a crumpled map, a half-packed backpack, and the urge to dive headfirst into a land overflowing with lush, untamed beauty.
Forests that smell of primal discovery, towering ridgelines sketching the horizon, streams that run like music through the landscape, and small seasonal waterfalls that appear only when they decide to.
Then there’s the lake — a sudden revelation. You turn a bend in the trail and there it is, almost out of nowhere, like a vast natural swimming pool.
It’s the perfect blend of settings to feel like the protagonist of a bygone expedition: you walk, you pause, you take it all in, you move on.
And like any great adventure novel, the story doesn’t end there.
Just a short distance away lies the even wilder landscape of the Monte Arcosu Nature Reserve. Climb higher and you’ll encounter the Castello di Acquafredda, seemingly placed there to remind you that this land has always been shaped by both strategy and scenery.
And when the call of the open horizon grows stronger, head down toward the coast to the lagoon and salt flats of Santa Gilla, where flamingos stroll slowly through the shallows like perfectly cast extras in a film.
