First a motionless, pink expanse of water, a second later the crash of the surf against quartz sand: the Mari Ermi Lagoon (Stagno di Mari Ermi) thrives on this hypnotic contrast. Encased within a shell of dunes just a breath away from the Cabras shoreline, this brackish mirror is one of those places where the nature of the Sinis Peninsula reveals itself at its most pure and unashamed, untouched by concrete or filters.
The real hosts here are not people, but the thousands of flamingos that treat the lagoon as a private sanctuary, admiring their own reflections in its shallow waters alongside herons, black-winged stilts, and marsh harriers. All around, the earth smells of sea salt, curry plant (elicriso), and tamarisks, set in a horizontal landscape where the only boundary on the horizon is the distant outline of Mal di Ventre Island.
Coming here means stepping into a wild realm, only to take a few steps and find yourself standing on the famous multicolored quartz "grains of rice" of Mari Ermi Beach. Yet the area is also a gateway to history: from here, it takes only a moment to reach nearby Is Arutas, the ancient Punic city of Tharros overlooking the sea, or the museum in Cabras, where the enigmatic Giants of Mont'e Prama continue to keep watch over this corner of Sardinia.
