The S'Omu 'e S'Orcu nuraghe, known as the House of the Ogress, rises in the territory of Jerzu and is immersed in the wild and evocative scenario of Ogliastra.
This monument, dating back to the Bronze Age, represents a fascinating testimony of the Nuragic civilization, perfectly integrated with the volcanic and limestone nature of the surrounding landscape.
It is a complex-type nuraghe, built with imposing blocks of local rock shaped by splitting and put into place using dry-stone techniques. Despite the signs of time, the structure still preserves part of its majesty: the main tower or keep and the additional bodies show the technical skill of the ancient builders in constructing with the technique of the false dome or tholos. The evocative name is linked to Sardinian popular legends, which often attributed the authorship of these titanic stone constructions to gigantic or monstrous figures.
Situated in a strategic and panoramic position, the building dominated the surrounding valley, performing functions of territorial and water point control as well as safeguarding internal communication routes.
