Dominating from the heights of its slopes the harsh and solitary landscapes of Gerrei, on the border with the territories looking toward Sarrabus, the ruins of Orguglioso Castle, better known as Sassai, emerge as a stone sentinel dedicated to control and strategy.
Erected during the 12th century by the judges of Cagliari to serve as a frontier outpost and defense against the neighboring Giudicate of Arborea, this fortified bulwark bears in its evocative name the echo of an era of knights, territorial disputes, and feudal pride.
The structure, built in a highly strategic elevated position, once visually dominated the course of the Flumendosa river and the ancient communication routes. Among its walls and the remains of the square tower, archaeological excavations have yielded fragments of military and daily life, such as cisterns, grain stores, and even a very rare bread oven carved into the kitchen spaces, alongside silent traces of medieval dramas linked to the struggles and sieges that marked its end in the fourteenth century.
Today, enveloped by the silence of the Mediterranean maquis and protected by restoration projects that have safeguarded its memory, the castle retains the severe and unaltered charm of the ancient border strongholds of medieval Sardinia.
