Imagine a Bronze Age builder who rejects the monotony of the local stone and decides to play with light.
The Nuraghe Alvu does not resemble any other building in the area due to an almost bold choice: anchoring the tower in the darkness of the volcanic basalt and then making it explode toward the sky in the dazzling white of limestone. It is a visual inversion of gravity that disorients the eye, transforming a solid valley outpost into a true optical illusion.
Inside, the contrast continues. The transition between the dark stones of the base and the light ones above changes the perception of the interior space, refracting the semi-darkness and giving it an unusually warm shade. The tholos dome soars overhead not as an oppressive mass of rock, but as a millimeter-studied mineral mosaic, where each block seems chosen as much for its static stability as for the color hue it would reflect during the day.
The Alvu is a work that demonstrates how Nuragic engineering knew how to afford the luxury of audacity, transforming material necessity into a gesture of pure and unexpected creativity.
