Atop Mount Sant'Padre in Bortigali, the Nuraghe Orolo dominates the bucolic hilly landscape of the Marghine and stands out as one of the best-preserved nuraghes in all of Sardinia.
Unlike the numerous dark basalt nuraghes found across the island, the protagonist here is trachyte, characterized by beautiful golden and pink hues. The blocks are shaped with extreme care and taper with great regularity as the masonry rises toward the summit of the main tower, creating a visual effect of great solidity.
The building belongs to the category of two-lobed complex nuraghes. The keep preserves two superimposed stories with their relative domes intact and reaches nearly fourteen meters in height. Crossing the entrance protected by a solid lintel, the access corridor houses a readily accessible helical staircase on the left that climbs to the upper floor. Here, a second chamber opens outward through a wide panoramic window facing the vast plain below.
Surrounding the main structure are the remains of a secondary tower, the connecting curtain wall, and the traces of the huts of the Nuragic village. Thanks to the extraordinary integrity of its rooms, this monument provides a fundamental and direct testimony for studying the construction techniques of ancient communities during the Bronze Age.
