The Elephant Rock

Whimsical and utterly unbelievable tales tell of a gang of Neolithic pachyderms who, before migrating to roomier lands, decided to sculpt this monument in memory of their passage—gifting it to a group of prehistoric humans who, in turn, made it sacred and eternal by transforming it into a burial site.

This is just one of the many flights of fancy one might take while admiring this hybrid masterpiece—part child of Mother Nature, part creation of an ancient people who, millennia ago, left their cultural imprint across the island.
The natural features are clear and striking: a towering, rust-colored elephant nearly 4 meters high, standing as a timeless witness to the ages.
The human touch, by contrast, is subtle and hidden—yet unmistakable in the skilled craftsmanship that carved, smoothed, and adorned the rock to create a sacred space where the dead were laid to rest, accompanied by their funerary offerings.

The Elephant Rock, or Sa Pedra Pertunta, is perhaps the only funerary monument in the world housed within the belly of a colossal stone beast.
Which is why, if you ever find yourself in Anglona, stopping by to pay your respects is simply a must.
