Guardingly positioned over the coastal strip and the mouth of the Flumendosa, in the territory of Villaputzu, the Porto Corallo tower stands as one of the most imposing testimonies of defensive architecture in Sarrabus, built in the second half of the 16th century to counter Barbary incursions.
Built from local stone with skillfully worked blocks, the structure features a solid truncated-cone shape with a circular floor plan, surmounted by a cantilevered cornice. The original access, positioned several meters above the ground to guarantee the passive defense of the outpost, leads into a spacious internal chamber covered by a domed vault and equipped with arrow slits facing the sea. A staircase carved into the thickness of the masonry leads to the upper arms terrace, a key station for controlling the coastline and for visual communication with the other towers of the coastal sighting system.
Today, the tower dominates the bay's landscape while preserving its monumental presence intact, serving as a perfect meeting point between the military architecture of the era and the panorama of southeastern Sardinia's coast.
