Situated on the peninsula of Sant’Antioco near Calasetta, the Pineta di Candiani is a lush green haven stretching all the way to the water's edge, creating a striking contrast between the cool shade of Aleppo pines and the vibrant turquoise hues of the channel separating Sant’Antioco from San Pietro Island.
Originally planted to shield the inland area from the fierce Mistral winds, the pine forest has evolved into a fragrant oasis where time naturally slows down. Twisted and sculpted over decades by the sea breeze, the pines interweave with lentisk and juniper, reaching right down to the low cliffs and pale pebble coves. It serves as the ideal sanctuary to escape the peak midday heat, enjoy a relaxing picnic, or wander the coastal paths while taking in the rich scent of pine resin and sea salt.
Yet Candiani offers more than just scenic nature: lingering among the branches and rock faces are remnants of recent history, including old military outposts and World War II bunkers that once guarded this stretch of coast. From here, it takes only a moment to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Cala Lunga, explore the sea cliffs of Nido dei Passeri, or head into the whitewashed fishing village of Calasetta for a stroll through its charming narrow streets.
