Among the cork oak forests of Borore, the silhouette of the Muttianu dolmen emerges from the ground with the essential power of the most ancient megalithic architecture.
This monument represents a rare and precious testimony to the island's earliest funerary practices, when prehistoric Sardinian communities entrusted the collective memory of their dead to raw stone.
The structure dates back to the Late Neolithic and is built according to the rectangular stone-box scheme. The burial chamber is delimited by thick slabs of dark basalt planted vertically into the ground, upon which a massive flat covering slab once rested. Along the outer perimeter, the remains of the peristalith and the tumulus of earth and stones that originally covered the entire burial are still visible, protecting the chamber and making the monument visible from a great distance across the Marghine plateau. Test excavations in the area have confirmed the site's function as a collective tomb and its importance as a sacred landmark for several centuries.
Remaining in contact with the large blocks of Muttianu allows one to perceive the deep root of megalithism in Sardinia, where solid and essential matter has successfully defied the millennia while keeping its original charm intact.
