There is no need to scale rocky peaks or climb the Supramonte to encounter prehistory in Cala Gonone, because the Archaeological Complex of Nuraghe Arvu is situated right next to the town, protected from behind by the imposing limestone walls of Monte Bardia.
The real surprise lies not only in its position but in the colors of the masonry. The archaic builders cleverly mixed dark granite blocks with the local bright white limestone, creating a banded chromatic effect that is unrivaled along this coast. Around the nucleus of the nuraghe, a true prehistoric district of imposing dimensions takes shape. More than one hundred stone environments design a dense maze of alleys, courtyards, and rooms, alternating circular huts with rectangular spaces reserved for craftwork and the grinding of cereals for the community.
The proximity to the sea transformed this village into a lively mainland port. The tableware and tools unearthed during excavations tell the story of an industrious community that did not live in isolation among the rocks at all, but managed the maritime exchanges of the Gulf of Orosei. Walking among the foundations of Arvu means immersing oneself in the true, daily life of Bronze Age Sardinia, just a stone's throw from the sea waves and outside the usual tourist routes.
