Few stones in Sardinia manage to convey a sense of sacred majesty like the monolithic stele of Coddu 'Ecchju.
Standing over four meters tall and shaped with an almost modern elegance, this gigantic slab of granite towers at the center of the Arzachena countryside, framed by the vineyards and holm oaks of Gallura.
The visual impact of the exedra is total. The large stone plates arranged in a semicircle seem to open like two great granite arms, conceived to welcome the community and channel the energies of the earth toward the small opening carved at the base of the stele. That narrow portal, an impassable threshold between the light and the darkness of the long covered corridor, tells of a civilization that did not see death as an end, but as a rite of passage and a return to the womb of nature.
What makes Coddu 'Ecchju extraordinary is its stratified soul. The monument has lived a double life, evolving from a simpler Early Bronze Age "covered alley" into a large taurus-shaped sanctuary. Stopping in the square, as the shadow of the stele stretches across the ground at sunset, offers one of the most magnetic archaeological moments on the entire island.
